Student Success Story · 2026
Year 10 student Amelie tackled a Year 11 subject early — and with Mathstar’s support, transformed her results and her confidence.
After scoring 95% on each of my last 2 tests — my confidence definitely grew. I started to feel motivated to study because I knew I had the right support and resources.

The Numbers
Amelie moved from the 60s to getting 95%+ for her recent tests — studying a Year 11 subject while still in Year 10.

Amelie’s Journey
How Amelie went from test scores of 60% to 95%+ for each of her last few Methods tests.
STEP ONE
Worded problems were the main areas that she struggled in. Her foundations were solid, but the worded application problems were causing her to lose a lot of marks on tests. She was also losing marks on careless mistakes.
STEP TWO
Our programs gave Amelie an abundance of resources for her to practice those worded problems. Her scores on those difficult worded problems rapidly improved after the targeted practice. She learnt tips on exam technique to drastically reduce careless mistakes on tests. She also changed her study habits — moving from cramming to spacing her study over three weeks — reducing stress and locking in knowledge properly.

STEP THREE
Flicking through her most recent tests during reading time, Amelie knew how to do every question before she’d even picked up her pen. The hard work, the tutoring, and the new study methods had all paid off — scoring 95% on each of her last 2 tests and heading into each test with full confidence.

Moments from Amelie’s Interview
Three short clips from Amelie’s interview — watch the moment, or read the quote beside it.
I was struggling the most with worded problems. Multiple choice and short-answer were okay, but applying maths to a real-life situation was much harder — I didn’t know which parts of each topic I should use.
Amelie on her biggest challengeWhile I was flicking through the pages during reading time, I looked at all the questions and I actually knew what each one was asking. There weren’t any questions where I thought, “How do I do this?” — that was my moment.
Amelie on her breakthroughI would definitely recommend not giving up. If you get your first test back and it’s not the result you wanted, keep going. With hard work, consistency, and persistence, improvement is possible.

Tackling a Year 11 subject — and excelling
Weeks of spaced study — replacing last-minute cramming
“The feedback from my tutor was very helpful because it allowed me to see where my gaps were. The way I studied also changed — I went from cramming to spacing my study over a longer period. That meant I wasn’t stressed, and it helped me feel more prepared.”
Amelie on personalised feedback
“I would definitely recommend not giving up. If you get your first test back and it’s not the result you wanted, keep going. A low result doesn’t mean you can’t do the subject. With hard work, consistency, and persistence, improvement is possible.”
Amelie’s advice to students
“Tutoring is very helpful because it’s more one-on-one or in small groups. My tutor is able to see where my gaps and errors are. At school, because the class is larger, it’s harder for teachers to focus on one person.”
Amelie on the tutoring difference
“My confidence definitely grew, and I started to feel motivated to study because I knew I had the right support and resources. I went from feeling shocked and disoriented when I moved up a year level to feeling completely prepared.”
