Personalised Maths tutoring from Primary to Year 12
Student Success Story · 2025
How personalised tutoring helped Drew go from struggling with English essay structure to writing with confidence — and scoring results she never thought possible.
" My confidence skyrocketed. Before tutoring, I didn't really know what I was doing. That confidence was critical going into the final three-hour exam — you need to trust your instincts.
The Numbers
Drew went from 30% grades to getting 90%+ for her essays in Year 12.
Drew's Journey
Drew came to Mathstar with real struggles and left with real results. Here's what changed — and how.
STEP ONE
Drew was getting 30% for her essays back then. She didn't have good essay structure, wasn't embedding quotes, and her analysis was too basic. In her essays, she kept retelling the story rather than analysing it — a habit that was hurting her grades.
STEP TWO
STEP THREE
With those changes, Drew moved into the high 80s and 90s — faster than she ever expected. Her grades skyrocketed. She walked into her 3-hour final exam with real confidence and the skills to back it up. Achieving 90%+ in VCE English.

In Her Own Words

Before I started tutoring, I was significantly struggling with structure and embedding quotes seamlessly. My crafting text was difficult — I didn't know how to apply stimulus properly or how to use the title effectively. With analytical writing, I tended to storytell a lot, and that decreased my grades significantly.

Almost immediately after starting tutoring, I noticed I was developing more sophisticated arguments. I was being taught how to think outside the box — especially for my Year 12 text, the movie Sunset Boulevard. I learned how to analyse things that most students wouldn't consider, and that's something I believe can only be developed through tutoring and thorough research.

Before I started tutoring, my grades were sitting in the 30s to 40s. I knew that needed to change — English is a top-four subject with a significant impact on your ATAR. The feedback shifted from "you're doing this wrong" to "how can we fix this and improve?" I quickly saw results, moving up into the higher band of 80s and even 90s. I didn't expect that to happen so quickly.

One major shift was that I developed a lot of confidence in my writing. Before I started tutoring, I didn't really know what I was doing. My mood and motivation were low, but with the feedback and support I received, my confidence skyrocketed. That confidence was critical going into the final three-hour exam, where you need to trust your instincts and have faith that you've been taught beyond surface-level analysis.

My experience was nothing but positive. My tutor was very knowledgeable, which was crucial. She was able to identify exactly where I was weak and how to address those gaps. I received in-depth, personalised feedback, and our sessions were tailored to my specific weaknesses, which led to consistent improvement. And sometimes tutoring wasn't just about the subject — there was often a lot of anxiety before SACs or exams, and we'd have conversations about that too.

Absolutely. I'd definitely recommend it to students who want to build their confidence, and particularly to those who are willing to put in the work to reach the next grade band. English tutoring especially is a 50/50 team effort — I had to put in a lot of work outside of sessions too, writing paragraphs, getting them marked, and going back to fix them. That discipline and cycle of feedback is what led to great results.
